Orphaned at a very early age in life, all George Walton did in life was sign the Declaration of Independence, become both a Governor and Senator from the state of Georgia, and be a founder of Franklin College which evolved into the University of Georgia. He certainly deserves to have the gorgeous thoroughfare named for him. Walton Way leads from the Medical District close to Downtown Augusta up through historic Summerville, which is the neighborhood that is home to Augusta University and some of the most glorious homes built after the Civil War. If you are interested in architecture. please explore this very intact and well-preserved neighborhood. If you continue up Walton Way, you will come to a commercial and retail district full of restaurants and stores of high quality. And if you leave Walton Way and drive down Highland Avenue, you will discover the shops and cafes of the upscale Surrey Center and soon find yourself at the iconic Augusta National Golf Club, home of course, of the fabled Masters Tournament.
